Technology standards setting organizations (SSOs) play a vital role in the technology industry -- helping create sustainable new industries through cooperation and interoperability. Without global standards, there can be no global markets. SSOs vary widely in structure, objectives, policies, degree of openness, and degree of formality. The World Standards Week Seminar on October 5th, 2005 in Washington, DC was the fourth in this successful series, following earlier events held in Portland, Oregon last March, in San Jose on October 29th, 2004, and at MIT on March 11, 2005.
